UTEP Moturi an under the radar receiver

UTEP wide receiver Jeff Moturi might be under the radar to some fans of college football or the NFL Draft, but the NFL scouts know all about him. Not only did he show them his skills at UTEP, and in the Texas vs. the Nation game but he also had a very good Pro Day.

At his Pro Day Moturi was 5-11 183 pounds, he ran the 40 yard dash in 4.38 seconds. He measured a 30.5 inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-10 inch broad jump and did 18 reps of 225.

“When I was at the Texas vs. the Nation game, and I was talking to scouts they didn’t understand why I wasn’t going to the combine and I didn’t either,” said Moturi. “I know I am an under the radar guy, and I have used that as motivation.”

Moturi had a very productive college career and as a junior was honorable mention All-Conference USA, he led the team with 51 receptions and rated second on the team in receiving yardage with 655 and had 9 touchdowns. This past season he had 53 catches for 974 averaging 18.4 yards per catch and 4 touchdowns.

Despite his productive college career Moturi knows he can get better.

“I need to make sure that I contrite on making the easy catches, and not worry so much on what move I am going to make next on the defender,” Moturi said. “I know I have good separation and do a good job getting in and out of my breaks, but you can always get better.”

Moturi is an explosive wide receiver that many teams look at as a guy who could play in the slot and be a good receiver making yards after the catch. Moturi has the confidence that he can play at the next level but won’t get too caught up in everything come draft day.

“Being an under the radar guy you don’t know where you are going and you can’t control that,” said Moturi. “(On the draft week), I might go bowling.”

Whatever team Moturi goes to, they will have a good receiver that will work hard to prove he belongs.

UTEP safety Cromartie-Smith not shy of contact

UTEP safety Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith is a player who likes to be physical and hit you and would rather take on contact then avoid it.

“I like to be physical, I like to play in the box, and I don’t worry about taken on pulling offensive linemen,” said Cromartie-Smith. “I like to read the play and then attack it, kind of like safety Adrian Wilson (of the Arizona Cardinals).”

Cromartie-Smith as a junior was second on the team in tackles with 77, he also had 2 tackles for losses, 1 sack, and 2 interceptions. This past season he led the team with 108 total tackles and had 4 tackles for loss and 1 interception.

Even with a productive college career Cromartie-Smith knows he can get better.

“I have been training and working to be more flexible, being able to flip my hips and change directions better,” said Cromartie-Smith. “I also know I need to work on my balls skills to become a better all around player.”

Cromartie-Smith did something rare in these days of getting ready for Pro Days and the NFL Combine he trainer at UTEP by himself and had some great results at his Pro Day. He was 6-1 1/2, 206 ran the 40 yard dash is 4.46 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.47 seconds, and the three-cone drill in 7.24 seconds. He measured a 32-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-9 inch broad jump and did 20 bench press repetitions at 225 pounds.

“I just trained at school, because I wanted to finish my degree, and that was important to me,” said Cromartie-Smith. “I did lift with a friend and mainly I wanted to work on the 40 yard dash and the bench press.”

Cromartie-Smith had some question marks going into the Texas vs. the Nation game if he could play at the next level but those questions where answered quickly.

“I wanted to see how I would do against higher level of competition, and at the Texas vs. the Nation game it gave me the ability to check that out,” said Cromartie-Smith. “After being there with all the guys I knew I could play at next level and it made me push myself even harder.”

Cromartie-Smith can play at the next level and will be a taken on contact rather then avoiding it.

Tim Knicky, outside linebacker here we come

Stephen F Austin defense end Tim Knicky is one of the small school diamond in the rough for the 2010 NFL Draft, that some fans might not know about but the NFL scout sure do. The scouts showed up for Knicky’s Pro Day where he was 6-4 252 pounds and ran the 40 yard dash in 4.63-to-4.67 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.12 seconds, the three cone drill in 6.91 seconds. He measured a 33.5 inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-8 inch broad jump and benched 225, 17 times.

“I am glade that the Pro Day stuff is over, and now I can get back to being a football player, not a track guy,” Knicky said.

Well Knicky did a great job and showed NFL scouts that he can de an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense with his workout at his Pro Day.

“Most teams are looking me as a 3-4 outside linebacker, but there are some that think I can play 4-3 defensive end if I gain some weight,” said Knicky. “I didn’t drop a lot in college, but playing in the Texas vs. the Nation game help show scouts that I can drop in to coverage and move around.”

Knicky had a very productive college career and as a junior was an AP Third-Team All-America selection. He finished eighth in the nation in tackles for losses and fifth in the country in sacks. He had 74 total tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss and 12 sacks. This past season had 41 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks.

Knicky isn’t worried about draft day and what will happen he is just looking forward to getting to work.

“I know if I worry about it, that isn’t going to get me drafted, or drafted any higher,” said Knicky. “If I get drafted or sign as a free-agent, I need to go in there and work and make my name then.”

With a number of teams moving to the 3-4 defense, Knicky pass rushing skills will be in high demand and has a few visit already set-up with NFL teams. Watch for Knicky come draft weekend to be draft to one of those teams that play a 3-4 defense.

WR Dez Bryant doesn't wow anyone at Pro Day

WR Dez Bryant of Oklahoma State didn't wow anyone at his Pro Day today, posting a 40 yard dash in 4.50 and 4.52 seconds and had a had a 38-inch vertical and an 11-foot-1 broad jump at 6014 and 224 pounds. Even with the 4.5 - 40 yard dash he still should be a top 20 pick, the question now is where.

Bradford has great workout, most likely lock for # 1 pick

Quarterback Sam Bradford today had a great work out in which every NFL team was there to watch him or the receivers that he was throwing to. He threw the football well and show the arm strength that NFL scouts and personal people wanted to see. He should be a lock for the number one overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Crompton no NFL Combine, no problem

Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton after his senior season many thought he was lock to go to the NFL Combine and after his performance at the Texas vs. the Nation game there was no doubt about it. Well he never got that invite.

“It was a bummer that is for sure, but God has a plan,” said Crompton. “I think it ultimately it helped me because not a lot of the guys threw at the combine and it helped me to get a number of teams at my Pro Day.”

As a senior Crompton leading Tennessee to the Chick-fil-A Bowl and he ended his senior season with 2,800 passing yards and 27 touchdowns and completed 58 percent of his passes.

“This year’s offensive system was my favorite offense because it was an NFL system,” said Crompton.

Crompton knows he needs to keep working to be the player he wants to be.

“I just need to make sure I stay on top of everything, every aspect of playing quarterback,” said Crompton. “I listen to all my coaches and am a very coachable player.”

At Crompton Pro Day he ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.85 seconds, he ran the short shuttle in 4.35 seconds, and the 3-cone drill 6.94 seconds. He measured a 31-inch vertical jump, a 8-foot-10 inch broad jump. He threw the football well and showed he has the ability to be a start quarterback in the NFL.

“We scripted all the throws at my Pro Day and I thought I did well,” said Crompton. “I’m now just staying in shape, lifting, running and throwing everyday.”

Crompton has five workout with NFL teams and a possible sixth where he will go to the NFL team facility to meet with the teams coaching staff.

Perrilloux long road hopeful will pay off

The road to the NFL has been a long road for quarterback of Ryan Perrilloux of Jacksonville State who was on the 2007 National Championship team at LSU. But because of off the field issues transfer from LSU to Jacksonville State and as a junior he started all 11 games was responsible for 26 touchdowns, including 19 passing and 7 rushing which earned Second-Team All-OVC and OVC All-Newcomer Honors after completing 187 of his 297 passes for 2,318 yards. This season passed for 2,350 yards and 23 touchdowns and only threw 2 interceptions the whole season. He also rushed for 443 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Perrilloux knows what he needs to work on as far as the NFL is concerned.

“In this process, NFL teams have asked me if I could come in a handle being a 4th string quarterback, and I have told them yes, I just want to have an opportunity to compete,” said Perrilloux. “I can’t change the mistake that have made in the past, but I can make sure that they don’t happen again.”

Perrilloux knows he needs to show that he can lead and be more mature then he was early in his college career.

“I need to prove that I can lead a football team and show my maturity,” said Perrilloux. “I have done counseling for a year and half to work on my decision making skills and my leadership skills.”

That is the biggest question marks for NFL scouts and teams it is not his athletic ability. Perrilloux measured in at his Pro Day with a height of 6022, 226 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.79 seconds, 4.51 short shuttle, and 7.30-second three-cone drill. He measured a 30-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-3 broad jump. The conditions where not perfect at the Pro Day as it was raining why they where conducting it.

Perrilloux has been training with Sam Morris the same trainer that has worked with NFL great quarterback Brett Farve and the late Steve McNair.

“I have been training with him and making sure I am in shape when my name is called and I get my opportunity,” said Perrilloux. “I think my best asset that I will bring to a team is my competiveness and wanting to win.”

It has been a long road for Ryan Perrilloux, but with his overall ability as a quarterback and showing that he is more mature, he could one of the biggest steals in this year draft.

Running Back Smith wows people at Pro Day, moving up the chats

University of Kentucky RB Alfonso Smith didn’t have the college production that that he wanted to and as a senior rushed for only 245 yards and 2 touchdowns, but he got his shot at the Texas vs. the Nation game to show his ability for NFL scouts.

Then the NFL scouts showed up at his Pro Day at Kentucky and Smith wowed them with his workout and physical skills measuring in at his Pro Day with a height of 6002, 211 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.28 – 4.33 second range. He measured a 36 inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-9 broad jump. He also had 19 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

Smith trained at Ignition in Cincinnati, Ohio to get ready for the Pro Day.

“I didn’t have the season I wanted so have a lot to prove at the Pro Day, right before the Pro Day started, I was nervous,” said Smith. “I knew I need to have a good Pro Day to have a shot.”

With his size, speed, strength and the ability to not only run outside and catch the football, but able to run between the tackles makes Smith one of the sleepers in this year NFL Draft. With NFL teams going to more of two back combinations of running backs, Smith can be a valuable assist to any NFL team he goes to.

“I think I can be a great 3rd down back, because of my speed and agility, but I need to work on my receiving ability,” said Smith. “But I am willing to do whatever a team ask me to do, play special teams, defense whatever to help my team.”

Now Smith is back in Lexington, Kentucky training and getting ready for any workouts that might come up.

“I am keeping lifting and running and ready for anything that might come up,” said Smith. “I have gotten film on myself to be able watch and see what I need to improve to become a better player.”

Smith has helped himself this post-season and has a lot of talent that some NFL team should take full advantage of.

Safety Aaron Webster a man on a mission

University of Cincinnati S Aaron Webster is a man on a mission, while the offense got all the credit for the success that Cincinnati had this season, Webster was holding the defense down and was third on the team in total tackles with 69, had 2 tackles for loss and he lead the team in interceptions with 4. He also had 5 pass break-ups and 9 passes defended with lead the team in both. He came to the Texas vs. the Nation game with one thing in mind that was to show the scouts that he could play at the next level.

“I haven been doing (defensive backs) drills, and more drills, I know that the coaches, trainers and scouts looks at everything in great details,” said Webster. “I need to show that I can cover, both in man to man and cover two, run support is my biggest strength but I need to show I can play in passing schemes.”

Webster wasn’t a combine invite, but should have been after his Pro Day where he measured in at a height of 6012, 208 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.49 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.22 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.72 seconds, he did the 60 yard shuttle in 11.90. He measured a 33.5-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-3 broad jump. He also had 21 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

Webster trained at D-1 in Cincinnati and graduated from Cincinnati in three and half years so he would be able to focus on football.

“It was tough taking 18 credits a semester even during football season, but it is worth it now,” Webster said. “Football now is my job from 6 am to 8 pm, now that Pro Day is done, I have been training on getting better in my defensive back skills and my conditioning.”

Webster doesn’t plan on watching the NFL Draft and will just relax and wait for a call from the NFL team that drafts him.

“You can’t control who drafts you, I only can control my work ethic and what I can do on the football field to get better,” said Webster.

Webster is a hard worker and a good overall athlete that would be a great addition to any NFL team. He will be a great special teams player as he learns the NFL defense and refines his coverage skills and will be able to do that because he has great instincts and football IQ.

News & Notes

Tulane senior running back Andre Anderson ran between 4.59 and 4.63 in the 40-yard dash to go along with 39" vertical, 10'3" broad jump and 17 reps of 225 pounds... he also caught the ball fairly well during his on-field workout... senior wide receiver Jeremy Williams ran in the high-4.4 range which is a big improvement from the high-4.5 to low-4.6 times he posted at the NFL Combine... Williams versatility on special teams and fine character references have likely earned him a spot in the third-to-fourth round range with Baltimore, Buffalo and Houston being three of the top contenders for his services.

Former West Virginia and NFL standout cornerback/return man Adam Jones ran in the 4.4 range and then did individual and positional drills organized by trainer Duke Rousse. The workout was held at Hahnville High School and attended by at least five NFL teams, including Detroit and San Francisco, who according to one source close to the situation interviewed Jones prior to and after the completion of Friday's workout.

Lindenwood/UT-Martin senior wide receiver/return man Roren Thomas suffered a slightly pulled hamstring while attempting to run the 40-yard dash at Missouri's Pro Day earlier this week, so he could now miss the chance to run for scouts unless he sets up another local Pro Day at his own school or finds a location and available area scouts once he is healthy... most area scouts expect Thomas to run in the 4.4 range or better along with exceptional shuttle drills.

Memphis/U-of-Miami senior tight end DajLeon Farr, a big-time recruit of the U-of-Miami who never really saw it happen for him, transferred to Conference USA after two seasons. This kid was offered by LSU, Texas, Miami and nearly everyone else, and he's from right outside Houston, Texas.

Not a lot of great film on him; had 14 catches for 76 yards and one touchdown as a senior and 24-210-4 are his career numbers. His best games of this season would be Southern Miss and Central Florida, but he has a long, lean frame; does not look 250 pounds on film.

He's roughly 6052, 260 pounds and a trainer contact says this kid has been running in the 4.6 range and 4.10 or better short shuttle; keep an eye on his Pro Day, which is March 26th.

Case Western Reserve senior quarterback Daniel Whalen ran 4.66 in the 40-yard dash and completed 15 reps of 225 pounds as part of his Pro Day workout at Ohio State. He's just under 6'1", 195 pounds, but the small school standout was a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, which honors the nation's best DIII player.

Whalen finished with 9,720 yards and 87 touchdowns during his four-year career and has found a mentor in former NFL and college football head coach Sam Rutigliano.

He was not allowed to compete in the on-field portion of Ohio State's Pro Day, but scouts from a handful of teams approached him afterwards, as did Baltimore Ravens quarterback coach Jim Zorn.

Concordia (CAN) fourth-year offensive lineman Kristian Matte is receiving a private workout with the Houston Texans as a possible convert from OT/OG to center. He's a better-than-expected athlete for a Canadian kid, having run in the 5.2 range, 31" vertical and mid-20's on the bench at about 6030, 290 pounds.

Bishop's (CAN) fourth-year RB/WR/RT Steven Turner, who has a similar build and physical tools to Pittsburgh Steelers RB/RT Stefan Logan, may now be earning some praise from teams south of the boarder.

At last week's CFL Evaluation Camp in Toronto, he was timed between 4.31 and 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, 4.03 short shuttle, 43.5" vertical, 10'5" broad jump and completed 20 reps of 225 pounds at just under 5'8", 176 pounds.

CB Joe Haden: 40 time really hurt him?

Most people either saw it on NFL Network or heard about it and that was one of the biggest stories coming out of the last day of the NFL Combine, cornerback Joe Haden of Florida ran a 4.57 and a 4.60, 40 yard dash. Scouts, General Managers, media, and football fans alike couldn’t believe it, most people expected him to run in the low 4.4, and now many people feel unless he comes back and runs that he will drop in the draft. But the real question should be, is Joe Haden the best cornerback in this years class, and the answer is yes. Is Joe Haden a first round talent, the answer is yes. Before the combine was Joe Haden a top ten talent, and the answer that some scouts will say is no. The NFL Combine and the test that the players do, allow scouts, and personal people to get a comparison on players at each position, but is it just a small part of their overall grade on a player.

Example the 2005 NFL Draft, there where 3 running backs that where looked at for the number one overall running back spot in the NFL Draft, Ronnie Brown of Auburn, Cadillac Williams of Auburn and Cedric Benson of Texas. When we went into the combine and everyone thought that these 3 players where all top 5 picks but didn’t know what order that they would go in, but when Ronnie Brown had a great combine and blew everyone away with his 40 yard dash, it was set and Ronnie Brown was going to be the first running back off the board.

So with no other prospect challenging Joe Haden for the number one cornerback spot in this years draft, his slow 40 time doesn’t really hurt him as much as people think. Now he will get a chance to run it again at Florida’s Pro Day and he hopes for a better time, but when Aprill 22nd comes around Joe Haden will still hear his name called in the 1st round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

S Mike Newton, Buffalo: Pro Day Star

Buffalo safety Mike Newton had a great pro day to open up the pro day schedule that NFL Scouts, GM and Head Coaches will be attending in the next month leading up to the NFL Draft. Newton who has started since his red-shirt freshman year was 5-10 197 pounds, ran a 4.46 and a 4.48, 40 yard dash, which would have been second for all safeties at the NFL Combine. He had a 41 inch vertical jump again which would have been tied for second among all safeties at the NFL Combine with USC Taylor Mays. He had a 10 foot broard jump, ran a 6.94 3 cone drill, a 4.17, 20 yard shuttle. The only thing that he didn’t do as well was the 225 bench, which he only had 9 reps.

There where 12 teams at the work which where the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, New York Jets, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, and the Atlanta Falcons. He was also asked to defensive back drills by the Packers, Eagles, Bills, Browns, Jets and Saints.

NFL Combine News & Notes

RUNNING BACKS:
California's Javid Best... could be considered in the early second round if teams have no concerns about his late-season concussion... many feel that he will, at least initially, work best if teamed with a north-south runner, the way the Giants have with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw.

Clemson's C.J. Spiller... someone could jump on Spiller in the same manner that the Tennessee Titans did with Chris Johnson in the first-round... his big-play potential and versatility would make him a solid addition to teams like Atlanta, Seattle or San Diego.

Tennessee's Montario Hardesty... has created enough buzz around his workout, which included leading all running backs in the vertical jump, broad jump and than posting very impressive 40-times, that many area scouts were saying they planned to go back and review additional game film from his career... one scout also noted that Hardesty looked very good during the weigh-in after adding ten pounds and showing that he worked hard since the end of his season.

Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer... may have slipped to a mid-to-late 2nd-3rd round because of a lack of deep speed and change of position in terms of where he will line-up in the backfield and than the fact that he did not have a great on-field workout, struggled with his hands/routes... Dwyer will need to have a strong Pro Day and work his 40-times down and show improved quickness in order to bounce back from his sluggish performance in Indianapolis.

WIDE RECEIVERS:
Clemson's Jacoby Ford... officially ran the fastest 40-time at the NFL Combine; 4.28... he's still seen as a smallish prospect that would be more of a slot receiver and return man... there is certainly a chance that someone will jump on the pure straight-line speed that Ford exhibited earlier than expected but most scouts insisted that he's still more of a late 2nd-3rd round pick.

Louisville's Scott Long... had the fastest 3-cone drill time at the NFL Combine; 6.45... hit 41.5" on the vertical and ran mid-to-high 4.4 range, which when combined altogether has teams going back to research why his production was so inconsistent during his senior year... Long was not one to point a finger, but the Cardinals offense struggled because of the QB play this past season and now Long's upside and natural skill set may allow him to be taken as high as the 3rd-4th round.

QUARTERBACKS:
West Virginia's Jarrett Brown... had a fantastic workout, running 4.54 in the 40-yard dash... 34.5" vertical and then threw the ball impressively during portions of his on-field workout... Brown may have the most upside of any available senior signal caller... he went 11-3 as a starter... lacks ideal experience and did threw more interceptions than touchdowns during his senior year if you subtract his four touchdown performance against East Carolina... however, he is more accurate than you would expect, has a very live arm and the athleticism to create plays in the pocket and on-the-move... special athlete with the ability to become a starting quarterback with 2-3 years of seasoning.

Ole Miss' Jevan Snead... threw the ball with improved accuracy than what you see on most of his junior game film... generally showed very good arm strength, quicker release than many of the other quarterbacks that threw the ball for scouts... he does eye down and aim the ball on some of his throws... also has one noticeable flaw to his throwing motion as he comes across his body, which created some of his accuracy and turnover issues this season... he has a fair amount of upside with patience, but there are also a few questions that need to be answered about his ability to take hard coaching and make the changes needed to be a successful NFL QB.

Cincinnati's Tony Pike... likely did not help or hurt himself with his on-field workout, but left a number of the same questions unanswered for scouts that they arrived with on him... shows a good, quick release, but he exhibited just average arm strength on his deeper throws... however, the biggest surprise was his accuracy throughout his on-field workout was disappointing... he also has a very slight frame needs 15-20 pounds bulk/muscle... and most scouts said he would be a 2-3 year project in their minds who is more of a 3rd round choice.

TOP OVERALL PICK... WHAT WERE THEY LIKE?

*What scouts were saying about McCoy and Suh after meeting with them this past weekend:

Oklahoma's Gerald McCoy... smiles, speaks well, very charismatic, humble about himself and game, good background... may be a little talkative at times for certain coaches or position coaches... not arrogant, but very confident in his ability... had a few issues with doing one of the on-field drills... scouts said it will be interesting to see if he will look to improve upon his combine results at Oklahoma's Pro Day or sit on what he recorded since he's pretty much already assured of being a Top 3-to-5 pick.

Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh... a little more reserved off-the-field, quiet, attentive, good passion for game, comes across as dedicated, hard worker and coachable... wants to be successful but not a "A" type personality... he will work hard even when he achieves success... will not mind doing all the dirty work as an interior defender to help create plays for others... was very well trained when it came to performing his drills.

NFL Combine: Monday Workout Notes

-- The largest single group, by position, were defensive linemen as a total of 66 were invited to this year's NFL Combine... Jay Hayes ran the on-field drills portion of the defensive line... he is the DL coach for the Cincinnati Bengals.

-- South Florida junior defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul impressed a number of his fellow defensive linemen as the pass rushing sensation did an unbelievable 13 consecutive back-flips following the end of their on-field workouts on Monday... remember this is a 265-pound defensive lineman... he was raw during parts of the on-field drills but he is such an exciting pass rusher that some of his technique and limited experience issues will get over-shadowed by his raw athleticism and potential... others that impressed included Ohio State junior defensive end/outside linebacker Thaddeus Gibson had a very solid all-around performance... he ran 4.7 range in the 40-yard dash... during the linebacker drills he was better in coverage than expected... so he might be Top-3 rated DE/OLB guy... TCU defensive end/outside linebacker Jerry Hughes showed better straight-line speed than expected, but a little stiff in some of linebacker drills... he looks the part of a hybrid and could likely play either RDE in 4-3 as a situational pass rusher or OLB in a 3-4 set.

-- Watching Oklahoma junior defensive tackle Gerald McCoy... he seemed a little nervous or anxious in certain portions of the workout... he scratched on his initial 3-cone drill and was very sloppy with his technique in that drill... he also stated that he interviewed with a wide variety of teams including Detroit, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Miami, Buffalo, Cleveland, Philadelphia and San Francisco... he's a little raw at times, but his penetrating, up-field style can jump out at you on game film... a few scouts said they are most excited by him as a 3-technique in a 4-3 more than when he bumps out to 5-technique in a 3-4... he drew some comparisons to Warren Sapp in terms of his personality.

-- Meanwhile, Nebraska senior defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh looked very fresh, confident and prepared and had his feet underneath him better during the on-field drills... he was solid across the board... love the explosiveness that comes out of his initial moves, but also showed a little better quickness and flash in terms of his pass rush and counter moves... what you get from Suh is the factor that he will also eat up space and create 1-on-1 match-ups for other defensive players in the front seven he plays on... so while McCoy might be seen as a better up-field presence you can create increased pressure by having Suh and his DT partner taking up three blockers at a time thus allowing for 1-on-1 situations for the DE's or allowing a linebacker to make the play behind the line of scrimmage.

-- The second tier of defensive tackles seemed to start taking shape as past Suh and McCoy there is a very solid core group of prospects that includes Penn State's Jared Odrick, UCLA's Brian Price, Tennessee's Dan Williams... of that group... Odrick is versatile, can play DT in 4-3 or DE in 3-4... Price has a quick first step, but did not run as well as expected and looked a little too heavy, which he likely did to impress or show scouts he could carry the added weight... Williams to me was the best of this group and there will also be a higher grade of prospects available in rounds four through seven than in the past few years... LSU's Al Woods, Arizona's Earl Mitchell, North Carolina's Cam Thomas, Georgia's Jeff Owens, Kentucky's Corey Peters and East Carolina's Linval Joseph are all guys that if they are taken in those mid-to-late rounds have the ability to become valuable interior linemen if properly rotated as rookies.

-- Remember this name... LSU senior defensive tackle Al Woods... he had 36" arms, 11" hands... hit 37" on the vertical... to put that in perspective the best vertical for all the wide receivers was 41.5" and this is a future NFL nose tackle... as of Monday morning he had done 13 interviews...

-- Interesting note that came about from this week's combine is that Arkansas defensive tackle Malcolm Sheppard has a bit of a blurry spot in his vision after recovering from a childhood accident that cost him to lose some of his vision in his left eye... Sheppard was actually hit with a bow-and-arrow and surgery first saved and then corrected most of his vision problems, but he still has a slight haze which teams will consider when comparing him to others... he's expected to go mid-to-late rounds.

-- Penn State linebacker Sean Lee has drawn some comparisons to former NFL linebacker Dan Morgan. both for his size, style of play and potential, but also because of the possible durability issues... on tape Lee has shown 1st-2nd round talent, although past knee injuries have created a bit of a red-flag on him so there is general concern about how long of a career he will have and if his knees can hold-up from the stress of being an every-down middle linebacker.

-- TCU linebacker Daryl Washington proved to all that he is one of the most athletic prospects at his position, but in-spite of the talk he could be moved to inside or even middle linebacker in a 4-3 scheme there are still some evaluators that feel by putting too much responsibility on his shoulders; making the play calls or having to read more from the inside spot than just reacting to the play/ball if stationed at weak-side linebacker that it could hamper his ability to make plays... they are also not sure if he is the quickest player on the field to diagnose things and having him realigning or calling defensive audibles might not be one of his best assets.

NFL Combine: WR Notes

Arrelious Benn of Illinois showed that he most likely will be the second wide receiver drafted and ran around the 4.55 range in the 40 and had a 37 inch vertical jump and benched 225, 20 times.

Antonio Brown of Central Michigan ran in the 4.50 range in the 40, but showed quickness and agility and did a good jump catching the football.

Dez Bryant of Oklahoma State didn’t workout because of injury, but should be 100 percent by his pro day.

Carlton Mitchell of South Florida is a player that not a lot of people might have heard of, but NFL scouts sure know about him, and did a good job at his workout. He did 16 reps of 225, ran a 4.49 40 yard dash and a 10 foot 2 inch broad jump.

Golden Tate of Notre Dame did a nice job catching the football and end up running faster then many people thought running a 4.42 40 yard dash, and had a 10 foot broad jump and did 17 reps of 225.

Blair White of Michigan State had a good day, he ran in the 4.57 rang in the 40 and did 18 reps of 225 and had one of the better 3 cone drills with 6.69.

Marcus Easley of Connecticut who only started as a senior ran a very good 40 time at 4.46 and had a 10 foot 3 inch broad jump and caught the football well in the drills.

Mardy Gilyard of Cincinnati ran what every one expect him to around the 4.6 rang in the 40 but did had a 39 inch vertical jump, but showed that he has good hands and looks very natural at catching the football.

Emmanuel Sanders of SMU put up some impressive number with a 4.41, 40 yard dash a 39.5 vertical jump, a 10-6 broad jump which was the best in the wide receiver group and a 6.60, 3-cone drill. He was one of the top performers in all the drills and helped himself this week in Indy.

Scott Long of Louisville might have had one of the more impressive overall workouts he benched 225, 20 times, ran a 4.46 40 yard dash, had a 10 foot 3 inch broad jump and had the best vertical jump of the wide receiver group with 41.5 inches and the best 3-cone drill with 6.45.

NFL Combine: RB Notes

Jahvid Best of California had a great work out running a 4.35 40 yard dash a 6.75 3-cone drill and showed quickness in the drills and he checkout medical that he is 100 percent which helps his stock out a lot.

Jonathan Dwyer of Georgia Tech showed good speed at running an official time of 4.59 and showed good quickness in the drills, he weight in at 229 and could stand to lose a few more pounds going into his Pro-Day.

Joe McKnight of USC ran a 40 of 4.47, a 10 foot broad jump and had a 36.5 vertical jump and showed a good job catching the football and in the drills. I do expect him to retest at USC Pro Day as many people feel he is faster then 4.47.

Joique Bell of Wayne State ran a disappointing 4.63 40 yard dash, but had a 36.5 vertical jump, a 10 foot broad jump and a 6.84 3-cone drill, and will retest at his Pro-Day and was asked by Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan to come to CMU to catch footballs for Dan.

Ryan Mathews of Fresno State had one of the better overall workouts and has but himself in the 1st round. He did 19 reps of 225, ran a 4.45 40 yard dash and had a 36 inch vertical jump and look very good in the running back drills.

Montario Hardesty of Tennessee surprised some people with his workout starting with the 40 yard dash which he ran 4.49, he had a 41 inch vertical jump, a 10 feet, 4 inch broad jump, a 6.87 3-cone and benched 225, 21 times.

Toby Gerhart, Stanford helped himself with his workout starting with the 40 yard dash which he ran 4.58, he had a 38 inch vertical jump, a 9 feet, 10 inch broad jump, a 6.94 3-cone and benched 225, 22 times.

Ben Tate of Auburn had a great workout and no one was expecting starting with the 40 yard dash which he ran 4.43, he had a 40.5 inch vertical jump, a 10 feet, 4 inch broad jump, a 6.91 3-cone and benched 225, 26 times.

CJ Spiller of Clemson only ran the 40 in which he ran a 4.37 and will save everything else until his Pro Day at Clemson.

James Starks of Buffalo had a good workout despite missing all of last year with a knee injury running his 40 yard dash in 4.50, he had a 36 inch vertical jump, a 9 feet, 11 inch broad jump, a 6.89 3-cone.
