Power Ranking Number 31: St. Louis Rams

Yes, Rams fans you do have the number one pick in this past April’s NFL draft in quarterback Sam Bradford and a Pro Bowl running back in Steven Jackson but besides that there isn’t much more to look forward to, but the good thing is that this is a team on the rise. If Bradford can get into camp on time and start week one of the season he has the ability to be a very good quarterback in this league. When I look at Bradford he reminds me of Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons and we have seen what Ryan has been able to do for the Falcons and they have a big physical running back in Michael Turner just like Rams do with Jackson. The offensive line is young and improving and should be helped out with the return of last year number two overall pick Jason Smith going into his second year and second round pick rookie Rodger Saffold as the book end offensive tackles.

The biggest question on offensive is the skill players besides Jackson, sure wide receiver Donnie Avery is a good receiver but is more of a number two receiver then a number one, they did draft wide receiver Mardy Gilyard out of Cincinnati and wide receiver Laurent Robinson is coming back from a season end injury he has last season and both of those players should help.

On defense last year’s second round pick James Laurinaitis had a great rookie season and he is someone to build a defense around. Everyone in St. Louis is hoping that third year player Chris Long has a breakout season this year and the Rams where able to keep their best secondary player in safety O.J. Atogwe.

The Rams aren’t a playoff team and still lack talent, but they are a team on the rise and if Bradford can be that franchise type quarterback that everyone thinks he can, watch out for the Rams in a few seasons.

NFL Draft News & Notes

-- Former NFL offensive coordinator and current Montreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman was front and center at Notre Dame junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen's Pro Day as he helped set-up the scripted workout that the possible Top-10 pick performed in front of NFL scouts. By all accounts the script was one much preferred to the one performed recently by Oklahoma junior quarterback Sam Bradford at his own Pro Day workout as Clausen threw many more down-field passes so his arm strength and the velocity on his ball was much easier to evaluate than at Bradford's workout. Trestman was believed to be a candidate for the Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders head coaching positions this past off-season and his continued work with helping to groom young NFL-bound quarterbacks will certainly keep his name among the hopeful NFL head coaching candidates in 2011, as well.

How the McNabb trade effects the draft.

With the news that the Philadelphia Eagles traded quarterback Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins, not only is Washington getting a possible Hall of Fame type quarterback but now the impact of the NFL Draft will be felt.

Now with the Redskins have their quarterback there is no shot that they will draft Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, if like we figure the St. Louis Rams draft Sam Bradford number one overall. The Redskins will most likely draft the best offensive tackle at number four hoping that Russell Okung of Oklahoma State is still there.

So the biggest question mark is where does Clausen go, well right now it looks like he will be available for the Buffalo Bills to select him with the ninth overall pick, but if he doesn’t go there how far will he fall. Would the Jacksonville Jaguars think about him at number ten? Or what about the San Francisco 49ers and one of their two first round picks if they are not sold on Alex Smith. Then there is always the Oakland Raiders, and we know they where looking at Donovan McNabb. A dark house could be the Kansas City Chiefs, since Clausen’s former head coach Charlie Weis is now the offensive coordinator and he has been all around the country working out college quarterback so that tells me they are not sold on quarterback Matt Cassel.

The other person in this situation is Jason Campbell and where does he go now, the Redskins don’t have to trade him, but I would think that they would want to. Some dentations for him could be Buffalo, Jacksonville, Carolina, Cleveland, or even Oakland. We have to see, but things now are getting more interesting.

Another note of interest, the Eagles only have two quarterbacks on their roster, so expect them to draft one late, or sign a few as un-drafted rookie free-agents.

QB Blake Joseph: An underrated gem

The 2010 NFL Draft class of quarterback is filled with high profile college quarterbacks, two Heisman Trophy winners, and many who had long careers at there respectful school. But just because a quarterback went to a high profile college program doesn’t mean he will be successful at the next level. There are many starting quarterbacks in the NFL that didn’t go to high profile college programs, and in this years draft there are some under the radar quarterbacks to keep your eye on.

One of under the radar quarterbacks is Sam Houston State’s Blake Joseph, who started his career at Houston and then transferred last year to Sam Houston State for his final year of eligibility.

At Sam Houston State this past season Joseph passed for 2,440 yards and 14 touchdowns, completing 61 percent of his passes and only throwing 6 interceptions. He also ran for 292 yards and 5 touchdowns. Joseph workout at Houston Pro Day and measured in at 6-1.5, 218 pounds, he ran the 40 yard dash in 4.75 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.37 seconds. He measured a 28.5 inch vertical jump, an 8-foot-8 inch broad jump and did 17 reps of 225 pounds.

But his workout number weren’t what the NFL scouts came to see, it was how he threw the football. Joseph had been working with quarterback coach Terry Shea, yes the same quarterback coach that worked with Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, who could be the number one overall pick and last season worked with two first round quarterbacks, number one overall pick Matthew Stafford, and Josh Freeman.

Shea who scripted and was on hand for Bradford workout in Oklahoma also did the same for Joseph workout. Shea thought that Joseph had a very good workout at Houston.

“Blake did a very good job at his workout, he handled the pressure very well and that can be difficult when you are throwing against air sometimes and all the NFL scouts are watching you, I have seen quarterback crumble but Blake held his own,” said Shea. “He showed very good arm strength driving the football up the field. He has a very talent arm and showed good footwork.”

Joseph workout consisted of 6 spot throws and 45 scripted passes. Joseph thought the workout went good as well.

“I thought it went well, I think I did a good job throwing the football,” said Joseph.

Joseph knows what the work he put in with Coach Shea paid off at his Pro Day.

“Before I went to workout with him, I heard a lot of good things about him, and everyone talked highly of him,” said Joseph. “He really helped me with my drops, both my 5 and 7 step, as well as my footwork and getting in balance.”

Joseph has the arm strength to make all the NFL throws and is a good overall athlete to move around in the pocket and avoid the pass rushers and can also pick up yards running the football. But he knows he can always get better.

“You can always get better at everything, I want to work on my drops more and getting more comfortable in those,” Joseph said.

Coach Shea just thinks that Blake just needs to feel more comfortable dropping back, but has all the tools to play in the NFL.

“He just needs to feel comfortable dropping back, making sure he is balance, he can continue to grow in his touch (throwing the football), but has the raw arm strength and is polished throwing the football with nice tightness,” said Shea.

Joseph is very good leader and is a team player and in 2008 even played some wide receiver at Houston to help the team and get on the field.

“I just want the opportunity to make a team and be able to come in and compete for a job,” said Joseph.

Joseph will get that opportunity where he is drafted or signs as a free-agent.

Bradford has great workout, most likely lock for # 1 pick

Quarterback Sam Bradford today had a great work out in which every NFL team was there to watch him or the receivers that he was throwing to. He threw the football well and show the arm strength that NFL scouts and personal people wanted to see. He should be a lock for the number one overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Sam Bradford not to workout at OU Pro Day

Oklahoma quarterback and possible number one overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Sam Bradford will not workout tommorrow at Oklahoma Pro Day but will keep working out in Florida and will set up another Pro Day on March 25.

Pre-Combine News and Notes

Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, will participate in all of the workouts at the NFL combine.

Wide Receiver Demaryius Thomas, of Georgia Tech, broke his left foot on Wednesday in Scottsdale, AZ, while training for next week's combine. He will not be able to do anything at the combine and it looks as if he will be out 4 to 6 weeks.

Wide Receiver Eric Decker of Minnesota will not be working out at the NFL Combine because of his foot injury that he hasn’t recovered from.

Quarterback Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame will not be working out because of his toe injury at the NFL Combine as previously been reported.

Question marks surround quarterback Sam Bradford of Oklahoma as to if he will workout at the NFL Combine, most people I have spoken to say that he will not work out in Indianapolis and will wait for his Pro Day.

All signing are pointing to that tight end Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma will work out at the NFL Combine because he is very close to being 100 percent.

Tight End Jim Dray of Stanford who injured his ankle at the Texas vs. the Nation game will not be able to work out at the NFL Combine, but hopes to be ready for his Pro Day.

Running Back Ryan Mathews of Fresno State will participate in all of the workouts at the NFL Combine and from people that are training with him as well as seen him train, he could be on player that blows the NFL scouts away with his work out numbers.

Running Back Jonathan Dwyer of Georgia Tech who some people question his weight gain this season has been working hard to be in the best shape of his life and should weight in less then around the 235 pounds he played at this season.

Story Lines:
Tim Tebow – The national media, NFL Network, ESPN will be all over his every move. He should test well, but in the quarterback drills I expect him to struggle.

Jimmy Clausen – Had toe surgery in the off-season, so won’t be able to compete in drills at the NFL Combine, will have to wait until Notre Dame Pro Day.

Sam Bradford – His camp is keeping it quite on how much he will participate in the NFL Combine, if he is able to show he is 100 percent and does well, it will help him try to get to the number one overall pick.

Tim Hiller – Needs to show better consistency then he did at the Texas vs. the Nation game, last week in El Paso.

Daryll Clark – Needs to bounce back from his East-West game performance or NFL teams might ask him to move to running back.

Jeavan Snead – Snead could take advantage of the NFL Combine will a great week could help his draft status, since he had an up and down junior year.

Sean Canfield – Canfield had a rough Senior Bowl performance and could use the NFL Combine to show his ability to NFL scout, and that his week down in Mobile wasn’t the real Canfield.

Jarrett Brown – Brown needs to show that he can be a complete quarterback and not just a great athlete.

John Skelton – Skelton will need to show better foot work and mechanics in the quarterback drills.

Levi Brown – Brown looked a little stiff in his throwing motion at the Texas vs. the Nation game and hopeful can show some more flexibility at the NFL Combine.

Tony Pike – Will Pike weight in at more then he did at the Senior Bowl?

Will Sam Bradford come back to Oklahoma?

Well it looks like Sam Bradford 2009 season is done with another right shoulder injury on Saturday against Texas, now the question is will Sam Bradford leave Oklahoma and enter the 2010 NFL Draft or will he come back to Oklahoma for his 5th year senior season. From what I am hearing from people around the Oklahoma program is that they believe that Bradford will be back in Oklahoma in 2010. The following are the reasons I am getting:

1. He wants another chance to win a National Championship.
2. He didn’t leave after he won the Heisman Trophy, and had a great season, why would he leave Oklahoma after a down season because of injuries.
3. He really loves Oklahoma and the college life.
4. His NFL Draft scout has dropped because of the injuries, and could get back to being a top 5 pick with a great season in 2010.
5. His family wants him to stay at Oklahoma.
6. He might have to have surgery and won’t be ready to work out for NFL scouts in February.

Only time will tell if what we are hearing out of Norman, Oklahoma is correct and Bradford will be back next season.
