Florida’s receiver Nelson a fast riser on draft boards

Florida wide receiver David Nelson is one of the biggest post season risers at the wide receiver position this year. He was a late addition to the Texas vs. the Nation game and came in a performed well and had a great Pro Day at Florida.

“I thought it (Texas vs. the Nation game) helped me out a lot, the scouts where impressed that even that I was a late addition that I came in ready to play and I wasn’t nervous and I just came to play football,” said Nelson. “The interaction with the scouts was great, it allowed me to show them what kind of person I am, and what type of character I have.”

At his Pro Day Nelson measured in at a height of 6-foot-5, 217 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.09 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.76 seconds. He measured a 38-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-4 1/2 broad jump and completed 16 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

He thought that getting one-on-one training and his preparation before the Pro Day really helped him put up the numbers he did.

“I wanted to train somewhere where it was more one on one type training. We did 5 or 6 mock Pro Days, so I knew what I was doing and also what I need to improve on,” said Nelson.

Nelson is a big receiver that at Florida played behind the likes of Percy Harvin, last year NFL rookie of the year and Riley Cooper, but showed when he had an opportunity he could make a play. As a junior he appeared in every game except Ole Miss, and his 12 receptions and 228 receiving yards were more than his two previous seasons combined, and had five touchdowns on only 12 receptions in 2008. This past season had 25 catches for 291 yards and 2 touchdowns.

One thing about Nelson is that he knows what are his strengths and what he needs to work on at the next level and plans on doing that.

“My strengths are my size, speed and quickness, I also know the game well, and I use that to my advantage,” said Nelson. “I need to be more physical, get stronger to be able to get off the jams and get a better release and I need to be more aggressive.”

Nelson will get that opportunity to improve his game at the next level.

Notes from Florida's Pro Day

Some updates from Florida's Pro Day – Check back for more updates. Update at 2:10pm EST. - Side Note - It was raining at the Pro Day so grass was wet when players where going thru drills.

Florida WR David Nelson at his Pro Day measure in at 6050, and 217 pounds ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.47 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.09 seconds, the 3 cone drill 6.76 seconds and the 60-yard shuttle in 11.28 seconds. He measured a 38-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-4.5 broad jump, and did 16 reps of 225 pounds.

Florida LB Brandon Spikes ran the 40-yard dash in the 5.02 to 5.08 second range.

Florida CB Joe Haden ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 to 4.48 second range.

Florida QB Tim Tebow threw for scouts and did a good job throwing all the routes, but he doesn’t appear to have a lot of arm strength and hasn’t done a great job getting the ball pushed out to the outer thirds of the field.

Florida LB Dustin Doe at his Pro Day measure in at 6006, and 228 pounds ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.65 seconds. He measured a 35-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-1 broad jump, and did 20 reps of 225 pounds.

Draft Digest: Florida vs Alabama

This game is for the right to play in the National Championship game and we could see as many as 20 players drafted in the 2010 NFL Draft if all the junior declare, and a few more sign as un-drafted rookie free-agents.

QB Tim Tebow (SR): Tebow is one of the best college football players of all time, but NFL teams have mixed reviews on his skills for the next level. NFL Grade: 2nd round


WR Riley Cooper (SR): Cooper is a very good overall football player and will make a good third or fourth receiver at the next level. NFL Grade: 5th round


TE Aaron Hernandez (JR): Hernandez is a very good receiving tight end, but needs to improve his blocking. Most likely will declare for the 2010 NFL Draft. NFL Grade: 2nd round


C Maurkice Pouncey (JR): Pouncey is a very good athlete with good strength and show he can get to the next level with his blocks. NFL Grade: 2nd round


OG Michael Pouncey (JR): Pouncey isn’t the athlete that his bother Maurkice is but still a very good offensive linemen. NFL Grade: 4th round


CB Joe Haden (SR): Haden most likely will declare and be the first cornerback drafted in the 2010 NFL Draft. He has very good ball skills and is a willing tackler. NFL Grade: 1st round


DE Carlos Dunlap (JR): Because of a DUI ticket he receiver he will not play in this game. Dunlap has all the physical tools to be a great defensive end in the NFL, but just needs to be more consistent. NFL Grade: 1st round


DE Jermaine Cunningham (SR): Cunningham is a good pass rusher and is a good overall athlete which some think that he could be a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL. NFL Grade: 3rd round


LB Brandon Spikes (SR): Spikes is a very good tackler and has the ability to make plays all over the field. NFL Grade: 1st round


S Ahmad Black (JR): Black does a very good just supporting the run and there is some thoughts that he will declare for the 2010 NFL Draft. He doesn’t have great size but is a productive player. NFL Grade: 4th round


S Major Wright (JR): Wright is a very good free safety and has the ability to play the run as well as cover a receiver man to man. NFL Grade: 4th round


Alabama


TE Colin Peek (SR): Peek is an all-around tight end who can block very well and also be a factor in the passing game. NFL Grade: 5th round


OT Drew Davis (SR): Davis has great size at 6-7 305 pounds and is a very good run blocker as a right tackle. NFL Grade: 7th round


OG Mike Johnson (SR): Johnson could be the first offensive guard drafted and does a excellent job in the run game. NFL Grade: 2nd round


DE Brandon Deaderick (SR): Deaderick has a good combination of speed and strength. NFL Grade: 7th round


DE Lorenzo Washington (SR): Washington has great size at 6-5 290 and would be a perfect defensive end in the 3-4 defense in the NFL. NFL Grade: Free-Agent


DT Terrence Cody (SR): Cody is a dominating player inside who takes on multiple blockers and is a very good run stopping player. NFL Grade: 1st round


ILB Rolando McClain (JR): McClain has been making plays very since he came to Alabama and is a very good overall linebacker who can play the run as well as the pass. NFL Grade: 1st round


CB Kareem Jackson (JR): Jackson is a very good overall cornerback with good size and most likely will declare for the 2010 NFL Draft. NFL Grade: 2nd round


CB Javier Arenas (SR): Arenas is not the shut down type cornerback but is a very good player who is a great return man. NFL Grade: 3rd round


CB Marquis Johnson (SR): Johnson plays in the nickel and dime roll, but has good size and shows good coverage ability. NFL Grade: Free-Agent


S Justin Woodall (SR): Woodall has played well this season and has shown some coverage skills for a safety. NFL Grade: 4th round

VanFulpen’s Heisman Watch

Here are my top five for the Heisman and why they will win the award and why they won’t win the award.

1. RB Mark Ingram, Alabama, So.
Stats: Rushing - 1,004 yards 6.6 average 8 touchdowns. Receiving - 19 receptions 186 yards 9.8 average 3 touchdowns

Why He Will Win It: He is the best player on possible the best team in the country and has put up some good stats. He needs to improve those stats and have some big games down the stretch but right now he is the front runner.

Why He Won’t Win It: He is a true sophomore, and voters still like to vote for upperclassmen, even with the resent history of sophomore winning it like Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford.

2. QB Tim Tebow, Florida Sr.
Stats: Passing - 1,159 passing yards, 8 touchdowns 4 interceptions. Rushing: 673 yards 3.8 average 12 touchdowns

Why He Will Win It: He won it as a sophomore and was in the race to win it last year. He is one of the best players in college football history and his team has a chance to win back to back national championships and three out of his four years.

Why He Won’t Win It: He hasn’t put up the huge stats like he did when he won it as a sophomore and that is what the voters want to see.

3. QB Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame Jr.
Stats: Rushing - Stats: Passing – 2,050 passing yards, 16 touchdowns 2 interceptions.

Why He Will Win It: He from Notre Dame and he is having an outstanding season and the team still has a chance to go to a BCS Bowl game.

Why He Won’t Win It: He is from Notre Dame and has already lost two games this season against two of Notre Dames biggest rivals.

4. QB Colt McCoy, Texas Sr.
Stats: Passing - 1,806 passing yards, 14 touchdowns 8 interceptions. Rushing: 104 yards 1.8 average 1 touchdowns

Why He Will Win It: He is the quarterback for Texas who should win out the rest of their games and go to BCS National Championship game.

Why He Won’t Win It: He isn’t having the season he had last year and he didn’t win the Hesiman when he put up great stats.

5. QB Case Keenum, Houston Jr.
Stats: Rushing - Stats: Passing – 2,734 passing yards, 20 touchdowns 4 interceptions.

Why He Will Win It: He has put up some huge passing stats and his team has only lost one game this season.

Why He Won’t Win It: He plays at Houston and that will hurt him in the long run at his chances of winning the Hesiman.
