Here are my top 10 senior safeties.
1. Taylor Mays, USC – Mays is the top overall senior prospect going into the season, he has the size and the speed that the NFL looks for at the safety position. Some scouts believe that Mays is a type of game changing player the Raven’s Ed Reed or the Steeler’s Troy Polamalu. Many thought that Mays would come out for this past Aprils draft and if he did he would had been a first round pick. He has great measurables since he is around 6-3 230 and can run in the 4.4 in the 40. He is a prototypical center-fielder displaying elite range to go along with good instincts, and has a great motor and intensity. On the down side he will take bad angles to the football and he relies too much on his pure speed more than proper technique.
2. Nate Allen, South Florida – Allen has good size at 6-2 206 and has the speed and athleticism to play both man to man a zone coverage at the next level. He will come down a support the run as well as play pass coverage and last season had 53 total tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception. This season Allen has been better then he was last season and so far has 60 total tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 3 interceptions and 4 pass break-ups. He has improved on his coverage skills and has moved up the draft boards.
3. Darrell Stuckey, Kansas – Stuckey was first team All-Big 12 last season. Stuckey lead the team with five interceptions and was second on the team with 98 tackles. He has good size at 6-1 205 pounds and not only does well in pass coverage but will come up and support the run. He has good speed and is an aggressive hard hitting safety. This season he has lead the team in tackles, with 73 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 interception, and 2 pass break-ups. He is a great in the box safety and just needs to improve his coverage skills to be a complete safety at the next level.
4. Kamer Chancellor, Virginia Tech – Chancellor is a big athletic safety and can match USC’s Taylor Mays in overall size as a safety as both are 6-3, and Chancellor is 225 pounds. Last season Chancellor had 52 tackles, 2 interceptions and 5 pass break-ups. He is a good overall athlete and his size helps when he comes down and supports the run, he is a little stiff in the hips in pass coverage and is better in zone coverage then man to man, but has the ability to play both. He will come up and hit you and just needs to work on his pass coverage skills to become and overall player at the next level. This season so far has 57 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 interception and 3 pass break-ups.
5. Harry Coleman, LSU – Coleman this season has gone from playing safety to playing linebacker because that is what the LSU Tigers needed him to do, but at the next level he will move back to playing strong safety. This season so far he has 63 total tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, and 3 pass break-ups. He has shown this season that he will be a good in the box safety and does have the coverage skills to play on the back-end as well. Has good size for a safety at 6-2 206.
6. T.J. Ward, Oregon – Ward has only played in 5 games this season so far because of injuries but has 46 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 interception and 3 pass break-ups. He has decent size at 5-11 208 pounds and is a good overall athlete. He has good coverage skills and played some cornerback earlier in his career.
7. Justin Woodall, Alabama – Woodall is a big, strong safety at 6-2 220 pound who is willing to support the run and has a nose for the football, he show good coverage ability for a strong safety and does a good job in the box. This season he has 36 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, and 4 pass break-ups.
8. Kurt Coleman, Ohio State – Coleman thought about entering the NFL draft before returning to Ohio State, which was a good move for him. Last season he had 78 total tackles, and has 11 total tackles in the Fiesta Bowl against Texas, and end the season with 4 interceptions. Coleman has alright size at 5-11 190 pounds and has good overall speed and has good range in pass coverage, and seems to be able to read and react well, in both the run and the passing game. This season Coleman has had 60 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 3 interceptions, and 2 pass break-ups.
9. Myron Rolle, Florida State – Rolle did not play this season because he won the Rhodes Scholar award and spent the year studying abroad. In the 2008 season he was third on the team with 62 total tackles, and had 5 pass break-ups. He has good size at 6-2 218 and he is a Rhodes Scholar so is a very smart person and he is also football smart. There was a lot of hype around him when he came to Florida State and never really turned into the player people thought he would be but is a very good player. That is what I see him being at the next level, maybe not a great player but a very good overall player.
10. Darian Stewart, South Carolina – Stewart is a hard hitting safety who get in there and supports the run, this season he has 50 total tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and 4 pass break-ups. He has decent size a 5-11 216 pounds. He is much more of a in the box safety and needs to improve his coverage skills to be a all around safety at the next level.
