Power Ranking Number 28: Kansas City Chiefs

Last marked the end of the Larry Johnson era in Kansas City as the running back was released but what it did was provided more carries for running back Jamaal Charles who in the last four games of the season had 658 yards rushing and four touchdowns and the final game of the season rushed for 259 yards and 2 touchdowns alone. In the off-season the Chiefs added free-agent running back Thomas Jones to give them a very good one-two punch at the running back position. With Jones and Charles running the football the Chiefs hope that will help quarterback Matt Cassel development.

One thing that the Chiefs offense does lack is some big play ability from the wide receiver position, true they have Dwayne Bowe, but he is a more physical receiver then a game breaker. That is one reason they brought in running back Jones is to allow Charles more opportunities in the passing game to make plays with his speed and quickness.

The Chiefs have been in the process of changing their defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4 for the past two seasons, and some of their parts on defense don’t really fit that scheme so it has been a work in progress. Glenn Dorsey who was the fifth overall player drafted in 2008 has moved to defensive end but is much more of a defensive tackle in a 4-3 defense. Tamba Hali who made the switch from defense end to outside linebacker did well with 8.5 sacks last season and the Chiefs are counting on him for even more this season. This year’s first round pick Eric Berry should help the secondary and should make plays as the starting free-safety.

Look for the Chiefs to be an improved team this season on the field, but don’t expect many more wins than last season.

  1. I certainly dont think that the Chiefs are going to be that good as a Broncos fan. But hey, they got some good running backs!

  2. They do have two good running backs, but I think the lack of a big play WR and a impact defensive player in the front 7 is going to hurt them
