2011 NFL Draft: QB’s

I know we less then a week from the 2010 NFL Draft being done, but here are my top 15 senior quarterbacks, some sleepers and my top 10 junior quarterback for the 2011 NFL Draft.

Most expect if Jake Locker of Washington has a great season to be the first overall player drafted in the 2011 NFL Draft, but he could be challenged by Ryan Mallett of Arkansas who is a red-shirt junior who thought about declaring early for this years draft, and would have been a first round pick. The most interesting prospect that I didn’t add to my list because he is a red-shirt sophomore and could possible declare early is Andrew Luck of Stanford. I don’t think Luck will declare early this season, but would be eligible so it is something worth watching.

Notes before the Storm

- Safety Eric Berry from Tennessee could go earlier then people think, could go at number three with Tampa Bay or number four with the Redskins.

- Quarterback Coly McCoy, Texas is moving up to the late first round, with teams like the Browns, Bills, possible trading back into the first round to draft him. Also the Vikings could draft him late.

- Quarterback Tim Tebow, Florida is moving up to the late first round, with teams like the Browns, Bills, Broncos possible trading back into the first round to draft him. Also the Vikings could draft him late.

- Quarterback Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame could be slipping all the way out of the first round some NFL teams are thinking.

- Offensive Guard Mike Iupati, Idaho could go as high as number eight to the Oakland Raiders

- Offensive Tackle Russell Okung, Oklahoma State might not be the first offensive tackle drafted.

- The Philadelphia Eagles are looking to trade up possible in the top ten to take safety Earl Thomas of Texas.

- Some people feel that cornerback Kyle Wilson, Boise State will be the first cornerback draft not Joe Haden of Florida.

- The Dallas Cowboys are looking to trade up to draft safety Earl Thomas of Texas.

Nicholls State Daniels could be a special team’s demon

Dominique Daniels of Nicholls State is an under rated defensive back who can play both corner and safety at the next level, who last season had 42 total tackles, 1 interception, 5 pass break-ups, and 6 passes defended.

“I can play cornerback, safety, punt returner, kick return, on special teams, I have good size and speed,” said Daniels.

Daniels does have good size at almost 6-2 and 190 pounds, and also is very explosive showing that with a 10-foot-2 inch broad jump and a 34-inch vertical jump.

But one things that Daniels has going for him is that he has already start working out with current guys in the NFL, with the likes of wide receiver Robert Meachem, corner back Tracy Porter, safety Chip Vaughn all of the Super Bowl winning New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans wide receiver Jacoby Jones every day at the training complete that Daniels was at to get ready for his Pro Day.

“Meachem has helped me get an idea of what he looks for when he is going against a cornerback, and what things he use to tip him off,” said Daniels. “It helps me to learn what a wide receiver is looking for so I can make adjustments. Jones has given me tips on the return game both as a punt return and kick returned.”

Daniels has had personal workouts with both the Saints and Atlanta Falcons leading up to the NFL Draft.

“The Falcons put me thru a long workout both as a defensive back and as a punt and kickoff returner,” said Daniels.

Daniels will have an opportunity to make an NFL teams not just as a defensive back, but what he can do on specials teams, both in the return game and the coverage units.

“I know when I get into a camp, I will be able to play on a team with having an opportunity on both punt and kick returns, but I can play cornerback,” said Daniels. “I am a competitive person.”

Southern Illinois Karim not a sleeper anymore

Southern Illinois running back Deji Karim came into the NFL Draft process without a lot of fan fare, but he is one of the fast rising players as we lead up to the NFL Draft. He was one of the NFL Draft sleepers when he first arrived in El Paso, TX for the Texas vs. the Nation game, but he is a sleeper no more.

Karim this past season rushed for 1,694 yard and 18 touchdowns averaging 7.1 yards per carry. He also caught 17 passes for 212 yards and 1 touchdown averaging 12.5 per reception. He was invited to play in the Texas vs. the Nation game, but was given an invite to the NFL Combine.

“At first it was a disappointment (not to get invited to the NFL Combine), but I knew I had to do something at my Pro Day to open their (NFL scouts) eyes,” said Karim.

Karim did just that at his Pro Day, where he, out jumped the best running back in Indianapolis by two inches in the vertical jump (43 inches). Karim measured in at 5-8 1/2, 209 pounds and ran the 40 yard dash in 4.40 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.33 seconds, and the three-cone drill in 6.95 seconds. He measured a 10-foot-3 inch broad jump and did 19 reps of 225 pounds.

“I start training down in Florida even before the Texas vs. the Nation game, and it really helped me their and also get everything out of my ability to have a great Pro Day,” said Karim.

After his performance at the Texas vs. the Nation game and his Pro Day, people started to take notice of him and he end up having personal visiting with a number of teams including the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, San Diego Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Indianapolis Colts.

But despite all the post season success that Karim is having he knows he can still improve.

“I need to work on my blocking, I have the effort but I need to improve on my technique,” said Karim. “I also need to work on my vision at the second level when I’m running the ball.”

With Karim being one of the fast risers on every teams draft board soon we will all find out what team he goes to.

News & Notes

Tulsa CB John Destin has received significant interest from the following teams, the Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Miami Dolphins, and there is a good possibility he will get drafted in the later rounds.

DB Dominique Daniels of Nicholls State had a personal workout with the Atlanta Falcons.

DB Dominique Daniels of Nicholls State had a personal workout with the New Orleans Saints.

QB Blake Joseph of Sam Houston State has significant interest from the following teams, the Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Many scouts feel that he has a better arm then last year quarterback out of Sam Houston State, Rhett Bomar who was drafted in the 5th round by the New York Giants.

DE/FB James Peters of Abilene Christian at his Pro Day measured in at 6003, 259 pounds and the ran the 40 yard dash in 4.62 seconds. He measured a 9-foot-9 inch broad jump, a 39.5 inch vertical jump and did 44 reps of 225 pounds. He projects as a full back at the next level and did a personal workout for the Dallas Cowboy.

TCU Richmond not a sleeping giant

TCU offensive tackle Nick Richmond has been one of the busier players this off-season visiting a number of teams including the New England Patriots, the Chicago Bears, the San Diego Chargers, the Oakland Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys. The reason is because it is hard to find 6 foot 7 inch tall offensive tackles with good feet and long arms and that is what Richmond has.

At TCU Pro Day, Richmond measured in at his Pro Day with a height of 6078, 310 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 5.24 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.81 seconds and the three-cone drill in 8.01 seconds. He also completed 19 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press, and had 36’’ arms.

Richmond had his chance to show his skills at the Texas vs. the Nation game and took full advantage of it.

“At the Texas vs. the Nation game, I think get me an opportunity to show scouts what type of player and person I am,” said Richmond. “I show them that I am a team player and I want to help the team in anyway possible. I can both sides both right and left tackle, and my determination is another one of my biggest strengths.”

But Richmond knows that he can improve his game and his overall ability.

“I think in run blocking I can continue to get stronger in my lower body to be able to stay of my blocks longer, and in pass blocking I just need to make sure my feet are under me in good balance,” said Richmond.

With Richmond traveling all over the county to meet with different teams, not every visit has been the same.

“With the team work outs I have been to it has been different, some teams want you work you out and see how you stack up against the other tackles, and other teams just want to chat it up and get to know you as a person,” said Richmond.

The draft process hasn’t always easy for Richmond, but he know it is once in a lifetime opportunity.

“This process has been stressful at times, but it is a good strain on your mind,” said Richmond. “You only have one time to go through this process, so you have to give it all you got, and I am just going to keep being me no matter what happens.”

Well what will happen is that Nick Richmond will get a shot to play in the NFL for some team and that team will be very happy they gave Richmond a shot.

Indiana’s Mayberry a linebacker to fit any scheme

Just because you don’t get invited to the NFL Scouting Combine doesn’t mean you have no shot at getting draft. Indiana’s linebacker Matt Mayberry might be one of this year’s players that get drafted that didn’t go to the NFL Scouting Combine.

This past season Mayberry lead the team with 108 total tackles, was second of the team with 11 tackles for loss, also had 5.5 sacks, and 3 interceptions. He is a good overall linebacker who has good instincts, can run and chase and should could play inside in a 3-4 or outside in a 4-3 as a weak side linebacker.

“Before the Pro Day I was mainly hearing from 4-3 teams, now after the Pro Day and teams have seen my speed I have heard from a number of 3-4 teams,” said Mayberry.

Well that is because Mayberry had a great Pro Day, he checked in at 6012 and 235 pounds. He posted times of 4.45 & 4.48 in the 40 yard dash. He also ran a 4.08 in the 20-yard shuttle, a 6.84 in the 3-cone drill, with a 9'11" broad jump and a 31.5" vertical. Mayberry also had 24 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

“I have always been a fast guy, but training at Ignition, they helped me perform like I did at the Pro Day,” said Mayberry. “A lot of people thought I was going to run in the 4.6 range and I think that I shock them with what I ran.”

Mayberry has worked out for a number of NFL teams personally including the Chicago Bears and the New England Patriots, two very different types of defenses. The Bears play a 4-3 defense with mainly Tampa-Two scheme principals, and the Patriots are a 3-4 defense that attack offense in many different ways.

With his speed and athleticism Mayberry will be able to come into the NFL and contribute right away on special teams, so things he like do.

“I think one of my biggest strengths is my focus on special teams and I played on specials every year besides my senior year, and I wanted to but the coaches just wanted me to focus on defense,” said Mayberry.

But Mayberry doesn’t think he has everything figured out and knows what he needs to do to improve his game.

“I think one of the things I need to keep working on is footwork, showing the ability to shed blockers and that is something that I can fix,” said Mayberry. “When I have talked with teams they like my speed, but they have told me I need to shed block better.”

Mayberry is a hard worker and isn’t just resting on his great Pro Day and waiting for the NFL Draft to come around he is still working hard.

“Now the biggest thing is change gears in my training going from more Pro Day training to now more conditioning and football training,” said Mayberry. “I’m still working hard and making sure I am in the best shape of my life.”

NFL Draft News & Notes

-- Former NFL offensive coordinator and current Montreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman was front and center at Notre Dame junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen's Pro Day as he helped set-up the scripted workout that the possible Top-10 pick performed in front of NFL scouts. By all accounts the script was one much preferred to the one performed recently by Oklahoma junior quarterback Sam Bradford at his own Pro Day workout as Clausen threw many more down-field passes so his arm strength and the velocity on his ball was much easier to evaluate than at Bradford's workout. Trestman was believed to be a candidate for the Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders head coaching positions this past off-season and his continued work with helping to groom young NFL-bound quarterbacks will certainly keep his name among the hopeful NFL head coaching candidates in 2011, as well.

Houston’s Brinkley always looking for an advantage

Houston cornerback Brandon Brinkley has been a starter at cornerback since his freshman season and he is one of handful of players in Houston history that competed in four bowl games during their collegiate careers and now looks to have an impact at the next level.

This season Brinkley was fifth on team with 75 tackles, including 50 solo stops, and was second with 4 interceptions, one that he returned for a touchdown. As a junior he lead the team with 15 pass breakups and ranked fifth with 74 tackles and had 4 interceptions, one that he returned for a touchdown.

Brinkley knows that going against the wide open passing attack of Houston in practice every day has help him become a better overall player for the next level.

“The NFL is turning into a passing game, and with the offense that we have here at Houston it has prepared me for that, as far as all the route combinations, plus we have small speedy quick receivers and we have the 6-3, big and physical receivers,” said Brinkley.

But just because he had success in college and faced a NFL type passing game in practice doesn’t mean he doesn’t think he can improve.

“I need to work on stay in my back petal longer, and just need to focus on doing my job and not worry about trying to do everyone else job,” said Brinkley. “I need to make sure I do my assignment and make sure my responsibility is taken care of.”

Brinkley loves to get in the film room and watch what the wide receivers that he faces are trying to do to get open and make sure that he picks up on the little things.

“I know the game of football, I try to be a step a head of the receiver, I study the little things to get an advantage,” said Brinkley.

Brinkley is a good overall athlete that has good size for a cornerback and has fluid hips, and shows good change of direction skills. He has shown that he has been a productive college player and facing the offense he has in practice every day should help him at the next level.

Tulsa cornerback Destin gaining momentum

When you think about Oklahoma cornerbacks you don’t think of Tulsa first in your mind, but Tulsa has one of the fast rising players in this years draft in cornerback John Destin. He had a very good senior season with 44 total tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 4 interceptions and 5 pass break-ups, and then followed it up with a great Pro Day.

“This process has been crazy, I had no clue how it all was going to be, but the coaches at Tulsa told me if I had a good Pro Day then I would get some looks,” said Destin.

Well he did have a good Pro Day he was 5-foot-11 7/8, and 191 pounds, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds, the three-cone drill in 6.82-seconds, and the short shuttle 4.15-seconds. He measured a 34-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot, 1-inch broad jump, and did 16 bench-press repetitions of 225 pounds.

“I think Pro Day answered a lot of questions about my speed, the position drills show how fluid my hip are,” said Destin.

Destin has gathered some momentum and has turned his Pro Day workout into a personal workout with the Miami Dolphins and also has one schedule with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But Destin knows that it is very hard to predict what is going to happen in the NFL Draft, and you only can control what you can do.

“The thing about this process is that you have no clue about what the coaches, and scouts are thinking in their war room, so you just have to control what you can,” said Destin. “I will bring a lot of physicality to the position, and I have a lot of confidence and I am a very hard worker.”

One thing we do know is that Destin will be able to show his physical skills this summer in a NFL teams training camp.

Florida’s receiver Nelson a fast riser on draft boards

Florida wide receiver David Nelson is one of the biggest post season risers at the wide receiver position this year. He was a late addition to the Texas vs. the Nation game and came in a performed well and had a great Pro Day at Florida.

“I thought it (Texas vs. the Nation game) helped me out a lot, the scouts where impressed that even that I was a late addition that I came in ready to play and I wasn’t nervous and I just came to play football,” said Nelson. “The interaction with the scouts was great, it allowed me to show them what kind of person I am, and what type of character I have.”

At his Pro Day Nelson measured in at a height of 6-foot-5, 217 pounds. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.09 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.76 seconds. He measured a 38-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-4 1/2 broad jump and completed 16 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

He thought that getting one-on-one training and his preparation before the Pro Day really helped him put up the numbers he did.

“I wanted to train somewhere where it was more one on one type training. We did 5 or 6 mock Pro Days, so I knew what I was doing and also what I need to improve on,” said Nelson.

Nelson is a big receiver that at Florida played behind the likes of Percy Harvin, last year NFL rookie of the year and Riley Cooper, but showed when he had an opportunity he could make a play. As a junior he appeared in every game except Ole Miss, and his 12 receptions and 228 receiving yards were more than his two previous seasons combined, and had five touchdowns on only 12 receptions in 2008. This past season had 25 catches for 291 yards and 2 touchdowns.

One thing about Nelson is that he knows what are his strengths and what he needs to work on at the next level and plans on doing that.

“My strengths are my size, speed and quickness, I also know the game well, and I use that to my advantage,” said Nelson. “I need to be more physical, get stronger to be able to get off the jams and get a better release and I need to be more aggressive.”

Nelson will get that opportunity to improve his game at the next level.
